Should I tip? It depends! Tipping an independant massage therapist in their own office is sometimes optional (though still much appreciated!), so check in individually with different places. At our home office, it is not considered a slight if you do not leave a tip. On the other hand, consider tipping your therapist if you're receiving a mobile massage or going to a spa! Spa therapists make only a fraction of what you paid for the massage.
What forms of payment do you accept? We currently accept payments made in card, cash and check.
Do you accept insurance? Unfortunately not. You can, however, sometimes pay for a massage with money from your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA). Please note that in order to do so, you may require a Letter of Medical Necessity from your doctor, so make sure to check your individual circumstances before booking! We are happy to provide a receipt for reimbursement.
Is Tortoiseshell a spa? Tortoiseshell is a home office. The outside looks just like any regular house, but the office inside is outfitted similarly to a spa massage room. Living quarters are sectioned off during work hours. Why the name "Tortoiseshell"? Well, we like cats.
Do you offer walk-ins? We do not offer walk-ins - you must book services in advance. Because this is a home office, we do not employ a receptionist. You will not be answered if you knock on the door outside of a pre-booked appointment.
How far do I disrobe? As much as you are comfortable. Generally, most clothing is removed for any massage involving lotion. Many clients prefer to keep their underwear on; this is completely okay and does not affect the massage. Your modesty is assured regardless by careful draping of the top sheet. If you feel nervous or uncomfortable and would prefer to stay clothed, just speak to your therapist about it - we are trained to accommodate such requests.
How much talking is okay during a massage? Client's choice! If you strike up a conversation, we'll happily respond, and if you prefer to zone out, we remain silent. That said, any feedback about the massage itself is not only okay but highly encouraged! We want to give you the massage that you want, and open communication is important for that. If you'd like to talk about other things going on in your life as well, we are happy to lend an ear. Anything you say during the massage is generally treated as confidential.
